With the rising popularity of mail order aligners, Dr. Updike discusses the 3 major differences between Invisalign and mail order aligners to consider before deciding which orthodontic treatment is best.
What’s Included
The first major difference is what is included when opting for mail order aligners vs. Invisalign. Typically, Invisalign treatment includes everything from all the aligners and retainers, along with necessary dental procedures from your dentist or orthodontist.
Mail order aligners tend to be cheaper, but do not include everything you may need. On average, the mail order aligners will only provide up to 6 months’ worth of aligners, and if you still need more after that period, you will be charged. You will also have a virtual orthodontist, which does not provide the same level of quality as an in-person orthodontist.
Quality
As mentioned, the quality is another huge difference between the two options. Invisalign trays are typically made with SmartTrack plastic that is very durable, flexible, and long lasting. Many times, patients will also need additional attachments added to the teeth to properly align the teeth.
Mail order aligners tend to use cheaper materials compared to their Invisalign counterparts. Invisalign aligners can only be used by a licensed orthodontist, so be wary of companies who claim their aligners are just like Invisalign.
Speed
Many mail order aligners claim to straighten your teeth in as little as 6 months, but this only applies to mild and maybe moderate cases at most. Invisalign can also achieve results in that time but done so in a more controlled environment and with supervision from an orthodontist.
One important note to mention is that orthodontic treatment is not only just about how straight your teeth look. Taking other aspects into account such as your bite placement, whether there is over-crowding, or other issues is equally important for your overall oral health.
