Many people believe once they get their braces off, it’s the end of their orthodontic journey, but that is far from the truth. Now that’s where retainers come in. Retainers are meant to retain your teeth position and don’t allow your teeth to shift after your treatment, especially in the first few months. Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, shares the 5 things you must know about clear retainers.
1. They’re Comfortable
There are many types of retainers, but many patients find clear retainers the most comfortable. Clear retainers are smooth and custom-molded to each person for the perfect fit. They are extremely comfortable to wear, and just slip over your teeth.
2. Clear Retainers Are Similar To Invisalign
Clear retainers fit over your teeth like Invisalign treatment. The main difference between the two is the type of materials it’s made of. Invisalign is made to be worn for a short amount of time, while retainers are made thicker and designed to last for years.
3. Take Out Your Retainer Before Eating or Drinking
Eating and drinking with your retainer on is not a good idea. It could damage the retainer, trap food in your teeth and retainer which makes you susceptible to cavities and plaque buildup. This also applies to chewing gum, as we don’t want to risk the gum latching onto the retainer.
4. Clear Retainers are Relatively Affordable
In the past, many patients believed that clear retainers are expensive compared to the older version of retainers with the metal bar (Hawley Retainers) or permanent retainers. However, with technological development, clear retainers are cost effective. It only becomes expensive if you need to keep replacing them.
5. Your Retainer Case Is Your New BFF
One common mistake is accidentally throwing the retainers away after taking them out to eat or drink. Since they are clear, sometimes a patient may forget that it was on a napkin and throw the napkin away. We advise that you keep your retainers in its box whenever you take them out.
