Can I Still Wear Retainers if it’s Tight?

Many assume that once they get their braces off, they only need to wear retainers for a short period of time. This is not the case, as retainers are a lifelong commitment after treatment. Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, discusses the importance of wearing your retainers, and if you can still wear them once they begin to feel tight.

How Long Do I Need to Wear Retainers For?

First, we’ll discuss how often you need to wear retainers after treatment. We advise that right after you get your braces off, you should be wearing your retainers the entire time unless eating or brushing your teeth. Teeth do have a form of memory, so if your teeth were crooked prior to braces, it may want to begin moving back to its original spot. To prevent the slightest movement, we recommend wearing your retainers consistently.

Can I Still Wear My Retainer if it’s Tight?

We understand that retainers can be uncomfortable or that you may forget to wear them after a certain period, so if your retainer begins to feel tight, it’s ok to continue to wear them. However, we would advise that if you begin to struggle wearing your retainer because your teeth no longer fit inside, or you find yourself applying excess pressure to your teeth or the retainer, it’s time to contact your orthodontist for a new retainer mold.

It is important to note that preventing movement within your teeth all together is the best solution. You endured the year(s) of treatment, so it is best to continue to wear your retainers as instructed. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to pay for additional retainers, or even worse, going through orthodontic treatment all over again.
