Common Braces Myths Debunked

There are many myths you may have heard in regard to orthodontic treatment. In this post, Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, will be debunking the most common myths about braces.

Myth: Braces are for children and young adults only.

The Truth: Anyone can benefit from orthodontic treatment—even adults! The primary difference between receiving treatment at a younger age versus older age is based on growth.  A child or teenager is still growing, meaning their teeth and bones are still shifting and maturing. An adult is fully grown and the face structure after orthodontic treatment may not be changed as much as a teen (unless a patient is undergoing jaw surgery).

Myth: Invisalign is better than braces.

The Truth: It varies from patient to patient. Each patient’s case is unique, and depending on several factors, Invisalign may be a better option for some and traditional braces may be better for others. However, if aesthetics is a concern, there is now an option for clear braces available as well. Again, this option may not be the best fit for every patient.

Myth: You only need to wear your retainer up to 3 months after treatment, your teeth won’t move anymore afterwards.

The Truth: This is absolutely false! Orthodontic treatment should be thought of as a lifetime treatment. Your teeth can still shift overt time even after treatment, and not wearing your retainer daily may cause alignment issues and cause a patient to start treatment all over again. Normally the retainer can be worn only at night just a few months after the braces come off. Follow your orthodontist’s direction and you should have a perfect smile for life!
