Considering Adult Orthodontic Treatment? Read This First

Have you been considering adult orthodontic treatment? Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, discusses what to expect throughout adult orthodontic treatment.

In recent years, orthodontic treatment in adults has increased significantly. More adults have sought treatment at Updike Orthodontics, and it has become more common than years past. Here are some key points to know and expect when undergoing treatment as an adult.

1. Adults are great candidates for orthodontic treatment!

Despite contrary beliefs, adults make great candidates for treatment. As long as there are no significant oral or health issues overall, orthodontic treatment may be a great fit! Adult patients are typically more responsible, motivated, and better informed than adolescent patients. They may even have better oral hygiene as well!

2. Treatment is different for an adult vs. adolescent

This is true for a multitude of reasons. The main difference is growth. An adolescent who is undergoing orthodontic treatment is still growing versus an adult who is fully grown. This matters in orthodontic treatment because when an adolescent is growing, so are their bones and face shape. This impacts the outcome of what their treatment looks like compared to an adult. Multiple types of malocclusion are corrected easier when an adolescent is undergoing treatment and may be more difficult as an adult. It’s not impossible, but it is an important factor to consider.

3. Fewer treatment options and longer treatment time

As an adult, there may be less treatment options than an adolescent may have. This goes back to the growth factor, because many preventative options may not be applicable to an adult anymore. Also, it is common to suggest teeth removal or jaw surgery to an adult, but many may not want to commit to those procedures and may compromise their final outcome. However, adult patients are usually more motivated and compliant than adolescents and are therefore better candidates for options like Invisalign.
