Irvine, CA- We often receive questions regarding TMJ at Updike Orthodontics, and if braces are the primary cause of this problem. Dr. Updike, an Irvine Orthodontist, discusses what TMJ is, the causes of TMJ, and its relation to orthodontic treatment.
What does TMJ stand for?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joints. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. Problems with it are also referred to as TMD (temporomandibular disorder).
How does TMJ occur?
TMJ or TMD occurs when this joint is injured or damaged. It creates a localized pain in the jaw area.
What are the causes of TMJ?
Some causes of TMJ include, but aren’t limited to: teeth grinding, stress, arthritis, injury to the teeth or jaw, gum chewing, and even poor posture.
What are symptoms of TMJ?
The most common symptoms of TMJ are: jaw pain, jaw clicking when opening and closing the mouth, jaw popping, locking of the jaw joint, ear pain, stiff or sore jaw muscles, and headaches.
Do braces cause TMJ, or can they cure TMJ?
Studies have shown that there is no correlation to orthodontic treatment (or braces) causing or curing TMJ. Malocclusion, or the imperfect positioning of the teeth when jaws are closed, in general cannot be linked to a higher chance of joint problems. However, there are two exceptions. The first is a cross bite, which causes the jaw to shift to one side when the mouth is closed. The second is an anterior open bite, when there is pressure on the back teeth and the front teeth do not close at all. Because there is pressure for the jaw to shift a certain way when the jaw is closed, these are the only two cases that may have a direct impact causing TMJ.
