It is widely known that clear aligners and braces help straighten teeth for a more aesthetic smile, but do they also fix jaw problems? Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, discusses whether clear aligners also help fix jaw problems.
What is TMD?
TMJ or temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull, and TMD is the disorder of that joint. According to the National Institute of Health, over 10 million Americans experience a level of TMD.
Clear Aligners or Braces?
Clear aligners such as Invisalign are a great alternative to braces if the person is a good candidate for the treatment plan. It is important to disclose to your orthodontist if you experience severe TMJ to determine which treatment is best. For example, if a person tends to grind their teeth during sleep, aligners may not be the best option. Generally, when someone undergoes orthodontic aligner treatment, it does help relieve some TMD pain. It is important to keep in mind that aligners are strictly dental aligners, not jaw aligners.
Can Aligners Cause TMD?
There are many factors to consider when choosing an aligner treatment plan. Fortunately, mild TMD is not a red flag to deter someone from receiving aligner treatment. If the jaw misalignment is too severe to be alleviated with orthodontic treatment alone, then your orthodontist may suggest corrective jaw surgery for long term relief.
