Happy New Year from our team at Updike Orthodontics! Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, shares some tips on how to keep your teeth healthy and achieve the best smile in 2022 and beyond.
Brush and Floss Regularly
For best practice, we recommend brushing your teeth twice a day and floss once a day. Another tip is to brush gently and not too hard. Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage your gums and tooth enamel.
Dentist Check-Ups
Another best practice we recommend is seeing a dentist once to twice a year for a routine checkup. This allows the dentist to examine and professionally clean your teeth, use dental x-rays, and check for cavities. This is especially important if you are currently going through orthodontic treatment.
Use Fluoride
Fluoride comes from fluorine, an element in the earth’s soil. Evidence suggests that a lack of fluoride could lead to tooth decay, even if one maintains the best oral hygiene. It is a common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash, but some products do not include fluoride.
Limit Sugary Foods and Starches
Common culprits for cavities include candy, desserts, sugary drinks, and processed foods. Food tends to linger in the mouth and break down into simple sugars. When eating these types of food, we recommend drinking water afterwards to help wash away as much food as possible.
Seek Orthodontic Treatment
Even if a person follows all the tips above, there are other factors, such as malocclusion (crooked teeth or poor bite), that will keep one from having the healthiest teeth and oral hygiene. It is easier for foods to get stuck between misaligned teeth, leading to plaque buildup and cavities. We recommend seeking orthodontic treatment to prevent any further complications as one ages.
