Should you floss or brush your teeth first? Oral hygiene is especially important during orthodontic treatment so Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, answers this commonly asked question.
According to the Journal of Periodontology, a study was conducted in 2018 found that flossing before brushing may be the most efficient way to thoroughly remove plaque. Researchers also found that it increased the distribution of fluoride concentration from the toothpaste, which makes your enamel stronger.
Brushing and flossing, especially with braces, is much more time consuming and difficult. We recommend utilizing small brushes that can clean in-between brackets and floss specifically made for those with braces, in addition to your normal toothbrush. To ensure the highest level of oral care, we also recommend using mouthwash at least once a day.
