Irvine, CA – Orthodontic treatment has evolved over the years, and with new alternatives for discreet treatments such as Invisalign or clear braces, one of the most frequent questions we receive is “should I get clear braces or Invisalign?” Dr. Updike will discuss each option and explain their advantages.
Invisalign vs Braces
Each patient’s case is unique, but generally speaking, Invisalign is a great option for those with a less severe case, whereas clear brackets are always effective and are a great option for nearly all treatment cases, but especially for more challenging cases. There are a few types of cases where Invisalign may actually be the preferred approach. Traditional braces consist of silver metal brackets, whereas clear braces are made of ceramic or other materials that closely blend in with the teeth. One important point is that the cost varies between metal and clear brackets. Clear brackets tend to cost more due to the more expensive materials required.
Cost
The cost of Invisalign and clear braces is fairly similar. To some extent this may depend on how long the treatment is estimated to be, but normally they are very close.
Treatment Times
One important factor to consider is the frequency of orthodontic visits when choosing between Invisalign vs. braces. Typically Invisalign treatment requires slightly less frequent visits. Also, emergencies for Invisalign may be less common and less severe. Overall treatment time is usually about the same for clear braces and Invisalign.
Maintenance
Another important factor to consider is the maintenance and upkeep of each treatment option. With clear braces, the brackets may stain over time and become slightly less white. We recommend brushing regularly to maintain the bracket color. With Invisalign, it is necessary to remove the alignment trays before eating and also necessary to clean the trays thoroughly each day to prevent plaque buildup.
