As we enter the new year, it is important to assess all aspects of our lives including our oral health. Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, discusses some important warning signs that you may need braces and what to do.
If you are experience pain when eating foods (especially hard to chew foods), that may be a sign of an underlying bite or teeth problem. In addition, if you find yourself biting your tongue or cheek when chewing, this could also be another warning sign as well.
Often times small gaps are not a concern, but if you have inconsistent or larger gaps, it’s time to visit an orthodontist for a consultation. Not only can braces create an aesthetic smile, but it could also prevent future problems such as tooth decay, jaw misalignment, and difficulty eating. It is also easier for food to get stuck in-between the gaps and increase plaque.
Similar to having gaps in your teeth, crooked and/or crowded teeth could also lead to complications in the future. Because the teeth may be overlapping each other, it is more difficult to prevent plaque buildup. If you have difficulty flossing in between your teeth, this is a sign to visit an orthodontist as well.
Protruding teeth is often an indicator that one may need braces. Braces will help align the teeth and also prevent any mouth injuries.
The jaw is an essential part of our day to day lives, and one potential reason why your jaw may be clicking is due to your teeth alignment. Jaw pain could be relieved once you undergo orthodontic treatment by straightening the teeth and correcting the bite.
