Embarking on your braces journey is exciting, and although straightening your teeth is the goal, so is correcting the arches. Dr. Updike, an Irvine orthodontist, discusses the importance of correcting the arches in your mouth and why it is necessary.
Why Is Correcting Arches Necessary?
First of all, the arches are the top and bottom areas where your teeth are (also referred as your “bite”). If we only focused on straightening the teeth, the arches may be misaligned when speaking or eating, and could cause more problems in the future. This is why when a patient is recommended to have teeth removed, the same number of teeth need to be removed from both the top and bottom arch in order to maintain balance and symmetry. This is also why many patients ask when they will get their braces taken off near the end of treatment because their smile looks perfect in the mirror. Even if your smile looks perfect, we need to ensure the bite is properly aligned before removing the braces or Invisalign.
How Are Arches Corrected During Treatment?
There are many techniques that the orthodontist could use depending on each patient, but the most common is the use of rubber bands or elastics. They often come in different sizes and provide varying levels of resistance when used. It is important to follow the instructions given by the orthodontist to ensure the quickest and effective treatment.
