Emergency Triage
Don't panic. Here is the plan.
Is this a True Emergency?
True orthodontic emergencies are rare. Most issues (broken brackets, poking wires) are comfort issues that can be managed at home until we can see you.
If you have experienced trauma to the face/mouth, uncontrollable bleeding, or severe swelling, call 911 or visit the ER immediately.
🤕
Normal
Soreness & Discomfort
Expected for 24-48 hours after adjustments.
Rinse: Warm salt water (1 tsp salt per glass) helps heal gum irritation.
Medicate: Over-the-counter Tylenol or Ibuprofen works best. Take it before the soreness peaks.
Diet: Stick to soft foods (smoothies, pasta, soup) for the first day.
🌵
Annoying
Poking Wire
As teeth move, the wire may extend out the back.
Wax It: Roll a pea-sized ball of orthodontic wax and press it firmly over the poking end.
Move It: If it is a thin wire, use a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab to gently push it towards the tooth.
Clip It: If wax fails, use clean nail clippers (sterilized with alcohol) to snip the excess wire behind the last bracket.
🧱
Monitor
Loose Bracket
A bracket has detached from the tooth surface.
Check It: Is it still attached to the wire? If yes, leave it alone and cover with wax if it spins.
Remove It: If it has slid off the wire entirely, save it in an envelope and bring it to your next visit.
Call Us: Let us know. We may not need to see you immediately, but we need to adjust your next appointment time to fix it.
🍩
Low
Lost Separator
The blue rubber ring fell out between your teeth.
Timing: If it falls out the day before your appointment, do not worry. It has done its job (created space).
Early Loss: If it falls out days in advance, call us. We may need to replace it to ensure the bands fit.
🦷
Low
Broken Aligner
Your clear aligner cracked or broke.
Wear It: If the aligner is cracked but still holds its shape, keep wearing it.
Move On: If it is split in two, try the next aligner in your series. If that one fits, wear it.
Go Back: If the next one does not fit, go back to the previous aligner and call us.
